What Schlock! The Secret History of American Movies Is About
The documentary tells the history of exploitation cinema, which grew up right beside Hollywood, in the words of the people who made those films. It takes in turn how the cheap horror, monster and sex pictures that filled the drive-ins of the fifties and sixties were made, how they were sold, and what the big studios later took over from them. Roger Corman, Samuel Arkoff, David Friedman, Harry Novak and Doris Wishman tell their own stories; Peter Bogdanovich and Forrest J. Ackerman also speak. Ray Greene’s eighty nine minute American documentary sets a good deal of footage between the interviews and looks at the cinema it describes without condescension. It was completed in 2001.
