What Schtonk! Is About
Schtonk! satirizes the real 1983 Hitler Diaries scandal, in which forger Konrad Kujau took 2.5 million German marks from journalist Gerd Heidemann, who then sold the diaries to Stern magazine for 9.3 million marks; a court later found that Heidemann had kept at least 4.4 million marks of it for himself. The film received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 65th Academy Awards, was the second most watched film of the year in Germany, and won three German Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Actor, and Best Director. Who it's for: anyone curious about an Oscar nominated German black comedy satirizing a real forged diary scandal. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a serious, dramatic historical account, since the film treats the events as near farce.
