What Secret Ballot Is About
On a deserted island in the south of Iran a ballot box is dropped by parachute, with orders for the soldiers on watch to accompany the election agent who is coming. When the agent turns out to be a young woman the soldier objects at first, and then the two of them spend the whole day crossing the island trying to collect votes. Most of the people they meet do not know the candidates, some refuse to vote and some want to vote in place of a husband. The argument between the two of them turns on what democracy is. Babak Payami’s hundred and five minute Iranian film took the best director prize at Venice; Nassim Abdi and Cyrus Abidi appear.
