What Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land Is About
Two theatre companies are forced to share one auditorium for rehearsal, and friction is unavoidable. One is working on Peach Blossom, a comedy played in period costume; the other on Secret Love, a sad play set in the present. The two pieces look opposed in every respect, but as the rehearsals run into each other it emerges that they are telling the same thing: the story of people forced to leave home. Stan Lai adapted the film from his own 1986 stage play, his first work as a director, and worked with the original company that had staged it. Brigitte Lin takes the lead. It opened on 10 September 1992 and was submitted as Taiwan’s entry for the foreign film award at the sixty-fifth Academy Awards.
