See No Evil

Sarah lost her sight in a riding accident. She moves to her uncle's house in the country; her uncle, aunt and cousin live there. She is learning the house: how many steps, which door, where each thing is. One day she goes out, and when she returns in the evening nobody answers. She moves about, bumps into things, and after a while understands what has happened: the family has been killed, and the killer will come back, because he left something behind. Richard Fleischer directs. Mia Farrow plays Sarah. The tension is built on a difference of knowledge; the viewer sees what has happened in the house before the character does. The killer's face is never shown; the narrative shows only his boots and his identity is kept until the end. Its best part is the long sequence inside the house; Sarah moves among the bodies without understanding. It was shot in England and the rural setting works inside the narrative. Fleischer worked across very different genres and this is among his thrillers. Its limit is the second half; the chase runs long and the tension falls. Who it is for: viewers who like seventies thrillers and narratives built on a single character. Who it is not for: the pace is uneven, the plot simple, and the ending familiar.
