See You in Montevideo

Dragan Bjelogrlić's 2014 Serbian film is the sequel to Montevideo, God Bless You from 2010 and follows the Yugoslav national team travelling to the first World Cup, held in Uruguay in 1930. The journey from Belgrade is concerned less with the matches than with the obstacles off the field: no money, political friction, and the players' personal stories. The film is loosely attached to historical fact and does not hide it; the aim is a sporting epic. Casting Armand Assante was a choice aimed at international markets. It was a large commercial success in Serbia. Its weakness is that the characters lack context for anyone who has not seen the first film, and that the emotional register is kept high throughout. Who it's for: viewers who like sports films and popular Balkan cinema. Who it's not for: anyone wanting historical accuracy, or starting without having seen the first film.
