What Shaan Is About

Police officer Shiv Kumar disrupts the operations of Shakaal, who runs a criminal organisation reaching across the country. Shakaal has him killed in return. Shiv Kumar's two brothers, Vijay and Ravi, live in Bombay off small swindles and until that day had taken nobody seriously. After their brother's death they swear to find Shakaal. Directed by Ramesh Sippy and written by the pair Salim-Javed, the film came after Sholay. It feeds openly on the James Bond pictures: a villain's lair on an island, car chases, helicopters and traps. Kulbhushan Kharbanda plays Shakaal. Amitabh Bachchan, Shashi Kapoor and Sunil Dutt are in the cast. At over three hours it is an example of the showy Indian action cinema of its period.
