Shades of Ray

Ray Rehman, born in America, comes home one night to find his Pakistani father at the door; his mother has put the man out of the house. The timing is bad, because Ray has proposed to his girlfriend and has not yet had an answer. While trying to bring his parents back together he meets a South Asian woman of mixed background like his own, and has to decide where his own identity belongs. The film treats the question of double belonging as comedy and reduces nobody to a single identity. The account puts the tension between family expectation and personal choice at its centre. Zachary Levi and Sarah Shahi appear in Jaffar Mahmood’s eighty seven minute American film, completed in 2008.
