What Shanghai Dreams Is About
One of the families taken out of Shanghai in the 1960s and sent to the interior, to the industrial towns built against the possibility of war, starts working out how to go back once the country begins to change in the 1980s. But their nineteen year old daughter Qinghong has given her heart to a local boy, and that threatens her father’s plan, so he tries everything to stop it. Wang Xiaoshuai’s hundred and twenty three minute Chinese film draws on his own childhood; his family too was sent from Shanghai to Guiyang in Guizhou.
