Sheriff

Syafiq Yusof's 2024 Malaysian film follows a police officer working in internal affairs. Sheriff is paired with a young narcotics officer; their task is to break a syndicate distributing methamphetamine and their approaches to the work do not match at all. The second line is corruption inside the police. Sheriff's unit investigates its own colleagues, and as the inquiry proceeds the syndicate's connections reach into the force; the narrative gives this not as a surprise but as an expected result. The production scale is large for Malaysian cinema and the action was shot with a wide cast. The film reached high box office figures at home. The narrative follows the template of the genre and character depth is limited. Who it's for: those who like Southeast Asian action cinema. Who it's not for: viewers uncomfortable with graphic violence; the film shows torture and executions directly.
