What Shinsengumi Chronicles Is About
In the middle of the nineteenth century the order in Japan is changing. An honest man decides to join the Shinsengumi. One of his reasons is his admiration for the man at its head. The other is this: he wants to live as a samurai and to die as one. But the further in he goes, the less what he sees matches what he expected. How the group actually works comes up against what he believes. That conflict ends somewhere bloody. The film builds the samurai picture as a story of disillusionment. Raizō Ichikawa takes the lead in Kenji Misumi’s Japanese film of 1963, ninety three minutes long.
