Shubh Mangal Saavdhan

In Delhi, Mudit and Sugandha meet through an arranged introduction and genuinely fall in love. As the wedding preparations proceed a problem surfaces: Mudit's erectile dysfunction. Both families hear about it and it becomes the neighbourhood's shared topic. R. S. Prasanna directed. Ayushmann Khurrana plays Mudit, Bhumi Pednekar plays Sugandha. The film remakes Prasanna's own Tamil film Kalyana Samayal Saadham. Its achievement is discussing the subject without shaming: the problem is treated medically, the solution is not magical, and the real question is whether the couple can carry it together. A sexual problem sitting at the centre of the story rather than serving as comic material was unusual in mainstream Indian cinema. The reaction of the elders is the source of the humour; everyone speaks about it by implication, and that language of implication is the funniest thing in the film. Who it is for: viewers who like Indian romantic comedy with a subject. Who it is not for: anyone who treats the subject as taboo; the whole film turns around it.
