What Silence and Cry Is About

Hungary, 1919. After a few months of the Hungarian Soviet Republic a nationalist counter revolution takes hold and the country fills with fear and pursuit. Former Red Army soldiers are running from gendarme patrols and secret police, and anyone caught is killed without a proper trial. Istvan Cserzi, one of those soldiers, has fled to the Great Plain and taken shelter on a farm run by two sympathetic women. Miklos Jancso's 1968 film shows how power operates through space and movement rather than plot: long takes, flat land, people constantly repositioned. In seventy two minutes it shows there is nowhere to run.
