The Lord's Lantern in Budapest

The film begins in a cemetery. The place is the Kerepesi cemetery in Budapest. Three grave diggers are at work there. Between them they talk about the state of the world. Then they step out of their roles. In a series of episodes they turn into other people. The rich businessman, the swaggerer, the victim, the underworld boss. Each episode is like a small absurd play. The subjects are love, marriage, friendship and public order. Meanwhile the director and the writer appear on screen. The two of them walk among the rest, watching and laughing. The stories leave the graveyard and return to it. The telling keeps reminding you that death cannot be avoided. Zoltán Mucsi and Péter Scherer appear in the hundred and three minute film, a Hungarian production Miklós Jancsó finished in 1999.
