What Cantata Is About
Ambrus is a young doctor working in the city. He comes from a peasant family. At the hospital he watches a senior doctor bring a patient back from cardiac arrest. Right after that the older man collapses himself. The event pushes Ambrus into questioning his whole life. He thinks the road from a peasant’s son to a city doctor came to him too easily. Having arrived without struggle, without learning anything of life, has left him arrogant and alone. In the end he gets in his car and drives to his father’s farm. In its last part the film opens out onto the Hungarian plain. Zoltán Latinovits takes the lead in Miklós Jancsó’s Hungarian film of 1963.
