Sillunu Oru Kaadhal

This 2006 Tamil film takes on a jealousy that has settled inside a marriage. Gowtham and Kundhavi are married; when Kundhavi finds a diary from his college years she starts believing he would rather be with Aishwarya, his sweetheart from that time, and sets about bringing the two of them back together. What makes it interesting is that the film frames that decision not as revenge or crisis but as a test an insecure woman sets for herself. Suriya and Jyothika married in real life the year it was shot, which gives their on-screen ease an extra reading. A. R. Rahman's score, above all Munbe Vaa, outlived the film and became a permanent part of Tamil popular music. Who it's for: viewers who enjoy Tamil family melodrama and Rahman's work in the 2000s. Who it's not for: anyone uncomfortable with a plot that romanticises jealousy.
