A short, lonely taxidermist takes on a young apprentice and the relationship turns into dependence, until a third person arrives and the balance breaks. Matteo Garrone explains nothing and leaves the intentions to the viewer, and that uncertainty is the source of the tension. The taxidermy is never forced into metaphor and is nonetheless always present, the effort of keeping the dead looking alive. Naples and its surroundings appear untouristed, in empty beaches and deserted roads. The central figure is pitiable and dangerous at once.
