What Dolls Is About
Three unconnected love stories: a couple tied together with a red cord, a meeting promised years ago and not kept, and an artist who does not want to be recognised. The film removes almost all dialogue; the narrative proceeds through seasons and colour, and the costumes become its main means of expression. It opens with a passage of traditional puppet theatre to which the three stories are tied. Takeshi Kitano wrote and directed. The costumes are by Yohji Yamamoto. A real warning: all three stories end in loss and the film is merciless at the close. Do not come to it expecting the director's comedies.
