What Sirocco and the Kingdom of Winds Is About
Benoît Chieux's 2023 French animation follows two sisters who pass into the world of a children's book written by their neighbour. Arriving on the other side they take the form of cats and meet Sirocco, the figure who commands the winds; the real matter is finding the way home. Its strongest quality is the visual design: watercolour texture, running colour and a city whose architecture obeys no logic. It is a rare example today of hand-drawn animation. The story is simple and moves through the relationship between the sisters, with the younger one fearless and the elder careful, well set up. Some sections may unsettle young children. Who it's for: families who like hand-drawn animation and viewers interested in stories told as fairy tales. Who it's not for: anyone wanting fast-paced animation, or young viewers wary of a dark fairy tale atmosphere.
