What Sissi - Forever My Love Is About
This is the three Sissi pictures Ernst Marischka made between 1955 and 1957, cut down into a single sitting. Elisabeth, raised loosely and happily in Bavaria, meets the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph; the young empress then cannot settle into the court, falls out with her mother-in-law, and finds her own footing in Hungary. Romy Schneider's Sissi became one of the best-loved images in postwar Europe, and her real mother, Magda Schneider, plays her mother on screen. What the films offer is a fairy tale. The loneliness of the actual Elisabeth, the death of her son and her murder in Geneva in 1898 stay outside the frame entirely, and Schneider spent the rest of her career running from the part.
