What Sister Smile Is About
Jeannine Deckers is a Belgian Dominican nun. She plays guitar in the convent, and the song she writes in 1963, Dominique, goes round the world overnight and reaches the top of the American charts. But fame and convent life will not sit together. Deckers leaves the order, never repeats the success in music, and then the tax bill arrives: the state wants tax on the royalties from Dominique, while she says the money was given to the convent. Stijn Coninx directs, with Cécile de France as Deckers and Sandrine Blancke as Annie Pécher, the woman she lived with for years. The two of them opened a school for autistic children. In 1985 they ended their lives together.
