What “Slovo” House. Unfinished Novel Is About
Taras Tomenko's 2024 Ukrainian film is set in Kharkiv in the thirties. Vladimir, a young poet from the provinces, moves into a building constructed for writers. The leading figures of Ukrainian literature live there. The film begins as a portrait of that circle; then the arrests start, and the narrative shows what the neighbours wrote about one another. The events rest on a real building and on what became of that generation. The period detail is careful. The tone darkens steadily. Who it's for: viewers of Ukrainian history and stories of literary circles. Who it's not for: viewers for whom arrests and executions would be difficult.
