Gaby is ten, the son of a French father and a Rwandan mother in Burundi, and his life is the gang of kids in the neighbourhood. Then the country changes: an election, a coup, and across the border the genocide in Rwanda. Eric Barbier adapted Gaël Faye's novel about his own childhood and kept the narration tied to the boy's perception, so for a long time the violence is only heard at the edges. The strongest passage is the mother's return from across the border and the fact that nothing afterwards is the same. Working with child actors and building the daily life of the street in detail gives the film its authenticity. Who it is for: viewers interested in African history and in war seen from a child's height. Who it is not for: anyone who would rather not approach a genocide narrative.
