What Smash His Camera Is About
Ron Galella is the best known paparazzo in America. For years he chased celebrities, and some of the most memorable photographs of the seventies are his. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis took him to court in 1972 and he was barred from coming closer to her than a set distance. Marlon Brando once hit him and Galella lost five teeth. Leon Gast's documentary neither acquits Galella nor condemns him. People who count him an artist speak in the film, and so do lawyers who say plainly that what he did was harassment. The real question is this: when is refusing to leave a person alone news, and when is it a crime. It took the documentary directing award at Sundance in 2010.
