This Is Paris

This Is Paris, directed by Alexandra Dean, is a YouTube Originals documentary examining the real life behind media personality Paris Hilton's public image, centered on her first public account of the abuse she experienced during roughly 11 months at Provo Canyon School at age 17, including beatings, solitary confinement, and being medicated without diagnosis. The film premiered free on Hilton's own YouTube channel on September 14, 2020. The documentary raised awareness of the "troubled teen" industry and fueled a movement; as a result, the state of Utah revoked Provo Canyon School's license. The film holds a 63 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Who it's for: anyone curious about a documentary where a media personality's first public account of childhood trauma led to a real legal consequence, a school losing its license. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a documentary focused purely on fame and glamour, since the film centers heavily on harsh childhood trauma.
