What Smyrna Is About
The film tells the burning of Smyrna in 1922 through the eyes of the Baltatzis family, wealthy Greeks living in the city. In the last year of the Greek Turkish war the Turkish army enters the city and a fire follows; Greek and Armenian people are killed and those who remain are forced to leave. The account opens with a notebook in the hands of a granddaughter looking back from today. The film tells the event from the Greek side and does not hide it; how the fire started is still argued over. It was adapted from a stage play. Mimi Denissi appears in Grigoris Karantinakis’s hundred and thirty eight minute Greek film, completed in 2021.
