What So Evil My Love Is About
The end of the nineteenth century. On a ship returning from Jamaica to England, Olivia, recently widowed, looks after the sick passengers. Among them is a painter named Mark. Once they reach London, Mark moves into her house. Olivia has fallen for him, and before long, in the name of helping him, she starts doing things she would never have done. Lewis Allen's film is adapted from a novel by Marjorie Bowen, writing under the name Joseph Shearing. The novel feeds on the case of Charles Bravo, a barrister who died in London in 1876; that case was never settled, and the book picks one of the possible answers. Ray Milland and Ann Todd take the leads. The Victorian setting is not used as decoration but as a prison.
