So Little Time

The events take place in Belgium during the Second World War. A mother and her daughter are what remains of a large family. The men of the family died in the war. A German commandant moves into part of their house. Nicole feels anger toward the occupiers. She says so to the commandant’s face. It turns out the two share an interest. Music, and the piano above all, draws them together. A bond forms between them. Both of them know the situation is impossible. The resistance asks Nicole to bring back information. She is caught between two fires. The film presents the German officer as a sympathetic figure. That approach caused argument in the year it came out. Marius Goring and Maria Schell appear in the eighty eight minute film, a British production Compton Bennett finished in 1952.
