That Forsyte Woman

The marriage of Soames and Irene Forsyte is a match of convenience. Young Jolyon Forsyte is the black sheep of the family, having run off with the maid after his wife’s death. June, the family’s young daughter, has found love with an architect, Phillip Bosinny. The dealings of the Forsytes with one another and with the society around them form the load bearing frame of this story set in the rigid and strict Victorian age. The film is about a class that puts property and respectability ahead of feeling; marriage works here like an order of goods. The account was adapted from a novel. Greer Garson, Errol Flynn and Walter Pidgeon appear in Compton Bennett’s hundred and thirteen minute American film, completed in 1949.
