What So This Is Paris Is About
Paul and Suzanne Giraud have a happy marriage in a quiet neighbourhood. When Suzanne sees the couple across the way dancing in revealing costumes she is scandalised and sends her husband over to speak to them about it. Paul knocks on the door and finds that the woman is an old love of his. Everything after that runs on lies. This comedy from Ernst Lubitsch's silent period is a textbook in implying things without words. Doors, glances and cuts say everything; nothing is spelled out and the audience understands all of it. The film's most famous passage is the ball with the Charleston contest: dancing feet, superimposed images and an editing rhythm that makes you feel music that is not there. At sixty-seven minutes, there is not one spare shot.
