What Something for Everyone Is About
In postwar Austria the young Konrad takes a job as footman at the castle of a widowed countess and quickly begins attending, separately, to everyone in the house. That is his method of rising: giving each person whatever they are hungry for. The first film by Hal Prince, the legendary Broadway director and producer, it holds black comedy and moral ambiguity together and treats its protagonist’s bisexuality with a matter-of-factness that was unusual in 1970. It departs a long way from Harry Kressing’s novel. Michael York plays Konrad and Angela Lansbury the countess, a performance that brought her a Golden Globe nomination.
