What Soorma Is About
Sandeep Singh grew up playing hockey in Punjab and made the national side. In 2006, on a train to a team camp, a pistol went off by accident and the bullet lodged in his back. The doctors told him he would not walk again. He spent two years in a wheelchair. Then he stood, then he ran, then he picked up a stick. In 2009 he returned to the national team and became its captain. What the film is interested in is not the medals but what the man did during those two years. Shaad Ali directs; two hours and eleven minutes, with Diljit Dosanjh as Sandeep and Taapsee Pannu and Angad Bedi in the cast. It is based on the real story. Singh played field hockey; in India the sport lives in cricket's shadow, and it is still the one in which the country has won the most Olympic medals.
