Spanish Affair

A comedy built on the differences between the north and the south of Spain. Rafa lives in Seville. At a nightclub he meets a woman named Amaia; she is from the Basque Country and has come to Seville with friends. She laughs at all his habits and leaves the next day. Rafa follows her. Arriving at her village he meets a problem: to be accepted there he has to look Basque. He changes his accent, changes his name and invents a new family history. Amaia's father enters the business. The man has never seen his daughter's fiancé, and Rafa suddenly has to take on that role. The humour is built on the clichés between the two regions: food, speed of speech, religion, politics and ways of joking. The narrative mocks both sides equally. Dani Rovira plays Rafa, Clara Lago plays Amaia, Karra Elejalde the father and Carmen Machi the neighbour. Emilio Martínez Lázaro directed. The film was an extraordinary box office success in Spain and became one of the most watched domestic productions in the country's history; a sequel followed.
