The premise began with a misremembering. Yost’s father described Runaway Train and believed a bomb had caused the crisis on it. It had not. Graham Yost built a threshold from the error: twenty miles an hour in the first draft, fifty after a friend called that too low. A week before shooting, Joss Whedon rewrote the dialogue. Yost has said almost every line came from him, though the Writers Guild denied him credit for dialogue-only work. The trace is in the lead: on the page Jack Traven was a wisecracking hotshot, on screen a polite officer keeping passengers steady, so the bus section advances by persuasion, not volume. The gap is not real. The jump used an intact, unopened freeway connector; a hundred foot ramp threw the bus and the gap was opened digitally. De Bont wanted the nose to drop, but the rear engine held it level and it landed like an aircraft. He had shot Die Hard and The Hunt for Red October before directing this. It won Oscars for Sound and Sound Effects Editing; in Film Editing, only a nomination. A good fit if you want to rewatch that jump knowing how it was thrown and why it lands flat. Not for anyone who treats losing that single rule to a subway chase as a broken contract.
