What Starfish Is About
Tom Ray was living an ordinary life when sepsis took hold, and within days he had lost both arms, both legs and part of his face. While he lay in a coma his wife Nicola was giving birth to their second child at the other end of the same hospital. The film is drawn from their real story and makes no attempt to manufacture heroism; it is about what caring actually involves, and anger, and exhaustion, and starting again anyway. Joanne Froggatt plays Nicola and Tom Riley plays Tom. Bill Clark directed a film that looks at a marriage more than at an illness.
