What Stars of Eger Is About
Zoltán Várkonyi's 1968 Hungarian film is adapted from Géza Gárdonyi's 1899 novel. It tells the defence of the fortress of Eger against an Ottoman siege in 1552: a small number of people inside held out for more than a month against a far larger army, and the fortress did not fall. The story runs through the lives of Bornemissza Gergely and Cecey Éva. The film looks entirely from the side of the defenders, and the other side is largely represented through a single fictional antagonist, a choice that comes from the novel itself. It is the adaptation of a book taught in Hungarian schools, and it became the most watched Hungarian film of the sixties.
