What Startup.com Is About
Kaleil and Tom have been friends since school. In 1999 they have an idea: a website where people can do their business with city government. They call it govWorks. Kaleil raises the money, Tom builds the technical side. Investment arrives in the millions, the office grows, Kaleil is on television and on magazine covers. Then the internet bubble bursts. The site does not work, the money runs out, the partners turn on each other. The camera is in the boardroom and also in the room where the two friends have it out. Chris Hegedus and Jehane Noujaim direct together; a hundred and seven minutes, shot between May 1999 and December 2000, with D. A. Pennebaker among the producers. What it records is not a company going under but two friends losing each other in the same room.
