What Station Is About
In 1968 the police officer Eiji Mikami sends his wife and son away. At that time he is on Japan’s shooting team, training for the Olympics in Mexico. His coach is shot dead by a fleeing criminal. Mikami also goes after a man who kills police officers. Years later he returns to his snowbound hometown in Hokkaido. There a relationship begins with a woman who runs a bar. The film tells not a crime story but the regret that gathers across years. The account looks at the same man in different periods, at long intervals. The work was chosen best film of the year in Japan, and Ken Takakura took the award for best actor. Ken Takakura and Chieko Baisho appear in Yasuo Furuhata’s hundred and thirty two minute Japanese film, completed in 1981.
