Adam McKay says the film grew from a single comic image: bunk beds. The idea, raised with editor Brent White during post-production on Talladega Nights, became a 180 page draft and kept expanding on set. Will Ferrell says a scene that would normally run a page and a half or two often came to ten pages. White says there was easily a four hour cut. The consequence shows on screen. Scenes swell inside themselves and then simply stop rather than advancing the plot, and the story is a thin thread between them. White reckons the biggest laugh is not a scene at all but a single moment, the bunk beds collapsing. The Catalina Island finale was not shot on the island but staged at a mainland golf club, while most interiors were shot on the Sony stages in Culver City. The Catalina Wine Mixer the film invented became real in 2015, when the company running the island created an annual event of that name at the end of May. A good fit if you will follow individual moments rather than a plot, knowing the picture was selected from a four hour cut. Not for viewers waiting for the crudeness and the childish behaviour to ease off, because the tone set by the bunk bed idea it grew from never changes.
