Steve + Sky

In Ghent, a man and a woman in their thirties begin a relationship without knowing what they want from each other. Around them are music, nightlife and a scattered circle of friends. Nobody makes a plan, and life does not forgive that. The film is not interested in love. It is interested in aimlessness: the characters keep postponing their decisions, and the film punishes them for the postponement. The result is a story that looks light and ends heavy. The form is loose: handheld camera, natural light, scenes close to improvisation, passages carried by music. It is Felix van Groeningen's first feature. The structure we recognise in his later work, breaking time apart to show the beginning and end of a relationship together, starts here. Titus De Voogdt and Delfine Bafort star, with Johan Heldenbergh in the cast; he would later take the lead in the director's The Broken Circle Breakdown. Who it is for: viewers who like Belgian independents and loosely built films about young relationships. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a clear story. The film is scattered and its characters' motives are often left unexplained.
