What Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator Is About
The documentary tells the rise and the fall of Mark Rogowski, one of the best known names in professional skateboarding in the 1980s. Rogowski became a champion very young and the star of his sponsors, and when the sport moved from the ramp era into the street era he lost both his style and his place, with drink and depression accompanying the decline. In 1991 he raped and killed Jessica Bergsten, a friend of his former girlfriend, and was sentenced to life in prison. Helen Stickler’s eighty two minute production combines archive footage of the period with the accounts of figures such as Tony Hawk, Stacy Peralta and Steve Caballero. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2003.
