What Stories Our Cinema Did (Not) Tell Is About
The documentary is built from scenes gathered out of the sexual comedies produced in great numbers in Brazil in the seventies. The film uses those scenes not as material to be laughed at but as a document of their period: it looks at what could be said in the years of the military dictatorship, what could not, and what the audience was being kept busy with. Setting the archive images side by side constructs an argument in itself; no outside voice states it. The account neither defends those films nor condemns them; it asks what kind of country they were made in. Fernanda Pessoa’s eighty minute Brazilian documentary was completed in 2017.
