What Storm Boy Is About
Mike lives among the empty dunes of the South Australian coast with a father who has withdrawn from the world. He does not go to school, he has no friends, and his days are spent on the beach. There he meets Fingerbone Bill, an Aboriginal man cut off from his own people. The man names the boy Storm Boy, and together they begin looking after three orphaned pelican chicks. Henri Safran directed it from Colin Thiele's 1964 children's book, and it became one of the best loved films of the years when Australian cinema was reborn. The windswept, bare landscape of the Coorong wetlands matters as much as the story. David Gulpilil, who plays Fingerbone Bill, is among the figures who changed how Aboriginal characters were shown in Australian cinema. The film does not avoid telling children about death and separation.
