What Strange Gardens Is About
Lucien, fourteen, is ashamed that his father, a serious and respected teacher, dresses as a clown and performs. His father's closest friend André takes pity on the boy and decides to tell him about the past the two men share: during the Second World War, after an act of sabotage, they were taken hostage, shut in a pit and left waiting to be executed. The German soldier guarding them there had been a clown before the war. Becker adapted it from Michel Quint's short novel. A warm, sad film in which a joke and terror can occupy the same scene.
