Stray Dogs

The film is set in Kabul after the Taliban. Two children, a brother and a sister, have been left on the street. Their parents are in prison. By day they go about looking for food. At night they go to their mother in the prison, which is also where they can shelter. The film follows the children’s day as it is and offers no explanation. The world of adults always stands a little way off. What a city leaves for children after a war sits at the centre of the account. The ninety three minutes are compressed into a few days. Marziyeh Meshkiny’s film, a coproduction of Afghanistan, France and Iran, was completed in 2004.
