Marziyeh Meshkini's 2000 Iranian film describes three stages of becoming a woman in three separate episodes. Hava, turning nine, learns that from that morning she must wear a chador, and negotiates one last hour of childhood. Ahoo enters a bicycle race against her husband's opposition. Houra, elderly, unexpectedly comes into money and buys everything she wanted all her life and never had. It was Meshkini's first film, from a screenplay by her husband Mohsen Makhmalbaf. Each episode is built on a single visual idea: an hourglass, a bicycle race, household goods lined up on a beach. That plainness is the way to say through image what cannot be said directly. It won a first feature prize in Venice. Who it's for: viewers interested in Iranian cinema, allegorical storytelling and the work of women directors. Who it's not for: anyone wanting realist narrative, or who will find the symbolic structure too explicit.
