What Sugarbaby Is About

Marianne works for a Munich undertaker and rides the subway in every morning, and nothing distinguishes one of her days from the next. Then she hears the driver's voice on the carriage announcement, catches sight of him for a second as she gets off, and that is that. She learns his name, slips into the drivers' offices to read the duty rosters, works out where he lives, takes leave from her job and gives the whole of her time to it. Percy Adlon shot it in acid colours and tilted frames, and the result sits comfortably inside neither romance nor comedy. It made Marianne Sägebrecht internationally known and led straight to her working with Adlon again two years later on Bagdad Cafe.
