What Suicide Bus Is About
A young woman named Mitsuki receives a ticket for a bus tour from her uncle. At first sight the tour seems ordinary; the only strange thing is that everyone is unusually silent. What she learns on the road is its real purpose: the passengers and the tour manager have agreed to drive the bus off a cliff so that their families can collect the insurance money. The film builds this as a black comedy and tells not how the decision was reached but what it is to sit side by side with people who have reached it. The account describes no method and makes death in no way attractive; on the contrary, it shows how alone each person inside the plan is. Dankan and Nanako Okochi appear in Hiroshi Shimizu’s hundred and one minute Japanese film, completed in 1998.
