What Summer Blooms Is About
Hatsumi Takimoto is twenty-seven, a former teacher now waiting tables in a restaurant on the outskirts of Tokyo, carrying something she has told nobody. Three years after her boyfriend’s death a letter from him reaches her, and when she runs into a student from her old classroom she finally says out loud what she has been holding. The Japanese title translates as the long dream of April, and the film takes that literally, letting grief move at its own speed rather than the calendar’s. Ryutaro Nakagawa made it with the independent collective Tokyo New Cinema, and it played in the main competition at the 39th Moscow International Film Festival, where it won both the FIPRESCI prize and a special award from the Russian film critics.
