What Sunset Strip Is About
In Los Angeles, a mile-and-a-half stretch of Sunset Boulevard has been one of the centres of American popular culture for close to a century. The documentary tells the story of that street: Prohibition in the twenties, the mob clubs, the youth riots of the sixties, punk, metal, hip hop and what it is today. The street itself is built as the character. Hans Fjellestad's film talks to club owners, musicians, actors and people who grew up there. Sofia Coppola, Alice Cooper, Ozzy Osbourne, Mickey Rourke and Hugh Hefner are among those who speak. The telling moves between nostalgia and criticism: the street is called a centre of creativity and of addiction alike. That the Sunset of today has become a tourist spot is not skipped either.
